Borstlap beschrijft de risico’s op morbiditeit en de behandeling ervan bij kinderen met downsyndroom (MC 29-30/2009: 1298). Er wordt een goed, maar selectief overzicht gegeven van de incidentie van de aandoeningen die kunnen optreden bij mensen met downsyndroom en de behandeling daarvan.
Uit eigen ervaring en op basis van literatuur mag ik concluderen dat een deel van de frequent voorkomende bijkomende ziekten bij downsyndroom wordt vergeten. Ik doel op de orthopedische kwalen; alleen heupproblemen komen al bij tot 30 procent van de mensen met downsyndroom voor. Dat is nog afgezien van de knie- en voetproblemen, die vaak niet te behandelen zijn.
Uit de schaarse literatuur blijkt dat de behandeling van heupproblemen in zo’n 60 procent van de gevallen faalt. Daarnaast heeft juveniele reumatoïde artritis een hogere incidentie bij kinderen met downsyndroom. Wat niet in de literatuur is terug te vinden, is het aantal kinderen dat om diverse redenen na de puberteit niet meer tot lopen komt en rolstoelafhankelijk wordt.
Op zich dus een prima artikel dat de mensen weer eens wakker schudt, en met name de voorlichting bij prenatale screening moet verbeteren, maar helaas toch een selectieve lijst.
